With the Government announcing a £15Bn spend on England’s Roads, there is an opportunity to focus on BIM in Infrastructure.
The benefits of BIM have been well documented, but normally we concentrate on the Architecture, Structural and MechanicalElectrical.
Many Building Information Modelling (BIM) authoring and model aggregation tools exist within the Civil Engineering Industry that can reduce designdetailing time, see issues before you go to site, have accurate quantities the list goes on, but there is the post construction information as well. The asset information as part of roads networks that needs to be maintained and should be captured accordingly as part of the UK L2 process. Clients should also understand what it is they need to ask for in the data model and more importantly know how to integrate it into their post construction systems. BS1192-4 “Fulfilling employer’s information exchange requirements (EIRs) using COBie – Code of practice” provides a guide. What actually happens is clients normally just end up asking for a “COBie” of part of the project which puts them at significant risk. The COBie templates for infrastructure need to be incorporated into the drops with the right information at the right time. Supply chain also need to ensure the right information is incorporated into their objects as well.
